Entry Requirements
Dogs must:
- Have achieved the Novice Working Retriever Certificate
Alternatively:
- A dog may qualify directly by achieving four Intermediate test awards
Overview
The Intermediate level builds on the foundations of the Novice assessment, requiring:
- Greater control at distance
- Increased complexity of retrieves
- More advanced handling and decision-making
How the Qualification is Achieved
- Dogs must pass three Intermediate tests
- The first two passes earn rosettes
- The third pass earns the Intermediate Working Retriever Certificate
Expected Standard
Dogs should demonstrate:
- Accurate marking and efficient retrieval
- Willingness to work across varied terrain / obstacles
- Confidence in water
- Controlled and responsive handling at distance
They should also be able to:
- Stop promptly on the whistle
- Ignore distractions
- Follow directions accurately
Test Structure
Each assessment includes four test scenarios:
- One land blind retrieve
- One water blind retrieve (may include a double element)
- One double marked retrieve on land
- One double marked retrieve on/over water
Additional elements:
- At least one diversion shot
- At least one diversion dummy
- At least one walk-up exercise, with another dog honouring
Key Expectations
Marking and Memory
- Dogs must remember multiple falls
- Handlers may nominate the order of retrieves in double marks
Handling
- Handling on marked retrieves is permitted
- Excessive handling will reduce marks
Steadiness
- Dogs must remain steady at the line
- Forward movement will be penalised
- Loss of control will result in failure
Delivery
- As at Novice level, dogs must deliver cleanly to hand
Faults Resulting in Failure
A dog will not pass if it:
- Fails to hunt effectively
- Refuses to enter cover or water
- Is unsteady or out of control
- Refuses to retrieve
- Shows fear of shot
- Displays aggression
- Is excessively noisy (dog or handler)
Switching dummies will result in elimination.
Judge Feedback
As at Novice level, judges will:
- Explain reasons for failure
- Offer guidance where appropriate
Dogs not yet ready are encouraged to return after further training.
