Purpose of the Scheme
The NEFRA Working Retriever Certificate Scheme has been developed to:
- Provide a clear framework for assessing the working ability of flatcoated retrievers
- Help members understand the qualities required in a capable working dog
- Support handlers in progressing towards a well-trained and effective shooting companion
The scheme begins at Novice level, with the intention of progressing to more advanced levels as experience develops.
The Role of the Retriever
The primary role of a retriever is to:
- Deliver game promptly to hand
- Work in a controlled, calm, and cooperative manner
A dog’s ability to fulfil this role depends on a combination of:
- Natural ability
- Training and handling
What is Being Assessed
Natural Ability
These are the innate qualities of the dog, including:
- Marking ability (memory of falls)
- Style and efficiency of movement
- Perseverance
- Courage
- Willingness to hunt
Trainability
These reflect the dog’s response to training and handling:
- Steadiness
- Responsiveness to the handler
- Delivery to hand
From a breeding perspective, natural ability is of particular importance, though both areas are considered in assessment.
How Dogs Are Judged
Dogs are assessed against a set standard, not in comparison to other dogs.
Judges award marks based on defined criteria, evaluating each dog’s performance objectively. The aim is to determine whether the dog demonstrates the qualities expected of a working retriever at that level.
Progression Through the Scheme
- Dogs begin at Novice level
- After achieving the required passes, they may progress to Intermediate level
The scheme is designed to:
- Encourage participation
- Support development
- Reward consistent training and performance
