Report by Gill Awty

Another great day with NEFRA.

We were fortunate with the weather and also the new ground. Open grassland, woodland, steep banks and even a river!

We began the day with bacon sandwiches followed by the Open and Puppy Tests in the morning and then the Novice Test after a sociable lunch.

There were four tests with the necessary adaptations for both the Open and Novice competitors. All testing the dogs’ natural hunting abilities and at times the judges’ patience!

The tests comprised double marks (landing in sight and out of sight), Blinds and Marks into woodland, Double blinds into cover at a distance, Blinds and Marks into the river and river bank.

I’d like to thank Denise Jury and Garry Ellison for their organisation and also the many helpers on the day who made it flow so smoothly. A special thank you to the judges, Godfrey Lowe and Malc Smith, without whom we could not have had the Test.

I always enjoy NEFRA events – lots of friendly faces and smiles.

Judge’s report by Mr Jeremy Hunt

I was recently one of the judges at the NEFRA working test held at Claughton-on-Brock, Lancashire and felt it worthwhile commenting on the standard and style of work.

From the outset let me say that in my opinion the FCR is hugely under-rated as a working gundog. On the day I saw some outstanding work demonstrating great drive and determined hunting ability. But it was clear to me that where dogs were failing during the test it was more to do with the way they were being handled rather than by any shortfall on the dog’s part.

Where owners had been tutored into handling their dogs by trainers more used to dealing with the all too often “hot” modern-day Labrador, they were not getting the responses they wanted.

I am known for my sympathetic approach to training Labradors and while I saw much thorough and very methodical dog work that was extremely commendable, very often it was interrupted and spoilt by excessive handling. A “less is more” approach would seem to be more successful with this breed.

Many modern working Labradors are challenging to train and unfortunately we’re seeing more gundog training classes adopt methods to deal this. But the FCR does not need to be trained as though it was a “hot” Labrador. When things did go awry for dogs at this test it was because handlers were trying to apply methods probably recommended at training classes dominated by truculent Labradors.

Yes, the FCR may take longer to mature than a Labrador and I know there can be frustrations encountered during training, but I have to say my lasting impression of the NEFRA test was of a very genuine breed with a willingness to please and wonderful generosity of spirit that was refreshing to see.

During the training days we will be holding next year we hope to devote one or two specifically to FCRs.

My advice to those novices working FCRs is not to push their dogs too hard too soon and not to allow their handling techniques to become frenetic. This is a great breed that deserves wider recognition in the shooting field.

Judge’s critique

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge this show, also my stewards for making the day run so smoothly and finally the exhibitors for bringing their dogs and taking accepting decisions with good sportsmanship.Overall the quality of the dogs were good, sadly some exhibits were far too overweight which spoilt their outline, a few of the younger males were alittle proud of their tails, which could be an age thing and the ring was rather small which made accessing movement a difficult task.I was really pleased to find out that a lot of my final line up were relatives, a true reflection on a good consistent kennel.

Class 1 Minor Puppy Dog 4.4

1st Godefroy’s Fenwood Bay A Dark Side Of The Moon

My Notes say ‘simply stunning’ and that he was. Beautifully balanced with a masculine head and dark eye, well laid shoulders, good bone and feet and the strongest of toplines for one so young which he held on the move, excellent mover. Best Puppy Dog

2nd Adams Kissock Dark and Dashing

Another Lovely puppy of correct size, the best of heads with a cheeky soft expression. Excellent front construction, good length of loin, lovely round bone and strong rear quarters,in good coat and condition, moved well, just didn’t quite have the balance of 1.

3rd Hean Fenwood Bay A Dark Side of Arangold

Another correct size balanced baby, nice head, strong neck and well placed shoulders, good bone and feet, excellent width of 2nd thigh, just not quite as settled on the move as 1 and 2.

Class 2 Puppy Dog 2.2

1st Heneseys Caci’s Hit The Road Jack With Wrensmead (IMP SWE)

Balanced puppy of correct size, good moulded head with a sweet melting expression, excellent topline and tailset, good bone and the best of feet, strong rear quarters, presented in hard condition, moved well once settled, would have liked a better lay of shoulder to complete the picture.

2nd O’Brien Pampaws Pleased As Punch

Upstanding mature dog with a strong masculine head, good front construction, well off for bone and coat. Would prefer shorter hocks. Moved steadily.

Class 3 Junior Dog 8.1abs

Beautiful class of youngsters

1st Ross Downstream Face The Music

This young man took my breath away! Correct size elegant dog with the best of heads, kindest of dark eyes, cheeky soft expression, strong neck into well placed shoulders, spirit level topline and well set tail, round bone and cat like feet, drove round the ring like he owned it. Certainly one to watch for the future. Expertly handled.

Res Best Dog

2nd Godefroy’s Castlerock Magics Dream About Fenwood

Beautifully balanced young male in excellent coat and condition. Lovely moulded head, well set ears and long elegant neck. Correct length of loin, the best of feet and strong rear quarters. Moved steady and true, would like more brisket to complete the picture.

3rd Heneseys Cacis Hit The Road Jack With Wrensmead (IMP SWE)

Class 4 Yearling Dog 4.2abs

1st Skitmore,Fretter and Rose’s Stranfaer Bodufinolhu

Elegant young man, needs time to fill out into himself, everything is there to come. Lovely head with a sweet melting expression, good bone and coat, the best of feet, good width of 2nd thigh and well let down hocks. Moved better in this class when settled.

2nd Hammersleys Buckleyhill Morpheus For Nellspeace

Upstanding, heavier type dog. Moulded masculine head, good front construction, deep body and cat like feet, very erratic in hind movement.

Class 5 Novice Dog 6.1abs

1st Heneseys Cacis Hit the Road Jack With Wrensmead (IMP SWE)

2nd Mcquillan’s Gemswin Black Magic

This elegant young man is very immature, but his confirmation and movement cannot be denied, what you see is what you get. The best of heads with a gentle sweet expression and a hint of cheekiness, strong neck and topline, correct length of loin, strong rear quarters and the most beautiful of feet, one of the best movers of the day.

3rd White’s Rievaulx Sea Biscuit of Whiteabbey

What a coat! Medium sized, balanced young male, excellent topline and tailset, correct loin and good width of 2nd thigh, a little over exuberant on the move, would like a more classical head.

Class 6 Graduate Dog 6.6

1st Romeo –Dieste Hopevalley Morning Mayhem JW

Handsome male of correct size, beautifully balanced in excellent coat and condition. Classical head with a kind dark eye and melting expression. Well placed shoulders, tight elbows and oval feet. Stong rear quarters, well let down hocks and correct length of loin. Moved well, handled to advantage.

2nd Mcqullians Gemswin Black Magic

3rd Ormes Elmstock Thyme to Dream

Correct size, lovely moulded head with a soft gentle expression, elegant neck and strong topline. Would prefer a better return of upper arm, good rear angulation, well let down hocks.in hard condition which enabled him to Move well although can be a little proud of his tail.

Class 7 Post Graduate Dog 7.1abs

1st Henesey’s Santonwood Lowry At Wrensmead JW

I have admired this young man from the ringside, Medium sized elegant dog, beautiful head and expression, correct front construction, in gleaming coat and condition, strong topline and well angled rear quarters, moved well, considered for top honours but he was a little too proud of his tail in the challenge.

2nd Newtons’s Jasper Im No Angel

My notes read, good honest, workmanlike dog. Medium size, in full coat and the hardest of condition. Masculine moulded head with the cheekiest of expressions, well off for bone, the best of feet, good topline and tailset, strong rear quarters, this boy never stopped wagging. Would like tighter front movement to complete the picture. Moved well with drive.

3rd Slack’s Islstrom Glen Dhu

Smaller size dog, every inch a flatcoat, one of the best heads of the day, the darkest of eyes and the most melting of expressions. In Gleaming coat, neat tight feet, excels in front construction, would like a stronger topline, correct length of loin and 2nd thigh. Needed to be moved quicker to really appreciate how this dog can move.

Class 8 Limit Dog 8.8

Beautiful Class I was spoilt for choice, could all change places on another day.

1ST Whitmore’s Castlerock Magics Stake On Clearfield

Another dog I have admired many times from the ringside, I have never seen him look so good as he did today, he just commanded attention. All male, but still has the elegance a flatcoat requires. His head is to die for with a melting dreamy soft expression, excels in front construction, tight feet, good strong topline, short loin and well set tail, which he carried perfectly on the move, powering round the ring effortlessly, pleased to award him Best dog and res Best in Show.

2nd Fox’s Steelriver Blazin Hot at Blacktoft

Lovely young dog, glamorous yet workmanlike, in excellent coat and condition. Classical moulded head with a sweet gentle expression and a kind dark eye. Round bone and tight cat like feet, strong level topline and excellent tailset, correct rear angulation and well let down hocks. Constantly wagging his tail whilst flowing effortlessly round the ring, just lost out to a more mature dog on top form.

3rd Brook’s Culmquill Makin Whoopee

This chap stole my heart with his ever wagging tail and his smiley face. Beautiful classical moulded head, with the most melting of expressions. Good front construction, well off for bone, good coat and the most lovely feet. Correct width of 2nd thigh, short hocks that were well let down, moved well once settled, he was overloaded on his shoulders which spoilt his overall outline.

Class 9 Open Dog 6.1abs

1st Halls Ghilgrange Magician Magic JW

Upstanding male but very balanced, in good coat and excellent condition. Classical moulded head with a sweet melting expression. Correct lay of shoulder and upper arm return, strong topline and rear quarters, moved well once settled.

2nd Brook’s Culmquill Supadupa Day

Medium sized, workmanlike dog, good bone and coat. Masculine head with dark eye, would like a little more neck. Correct length of loin, good rear angulation and well let down hocks, moved well just a little proud of his tail.

3rd Adam’s Fordingham Black Diamond

Upstanding elegant dog, classical head and expression, spirit level topline and excellent tailset, would like a better layback of shoulder to finish the picture, I wanted to place this dog higher but he was giving his handler a hard time. Moved effortlessly.

Class 10 Veteran Dog 2.2

1st Fox’s Blacktoft Ever Blazin

Hard to believe this gentleman is a veteran. Correct sized workmanlike dog, has the correct amount of raciness without weediness, showing power without lumber, just as a flatcoat in its prime should. Classical moulded head with the darkest of eyes and a soft kind expression, good front confirmation, strong topline with his tail flowing straight off his back, strong rear, with short well let down hocks, he powered round the ring like a 3 year old. Please to read he is the sire of my BIS winner and the sister of my best veteran bitch. Best Veteran In Show.

2nd Whitings Torwood Able Azo of Spenbeck

Another young at heart veteran, who left some of his coat at home today, lovely deep body, good bone, he wagged his heart out. Moved ok once settled.

1st Brook’s Flathams Goade Delbax from Castlerock

Beautiful elegant bitch, the best of topline and tailsets, lovely moulded head with a kind gentle expression. Long neck into well placed shoulders, tight feet and correct rear angulation. For me this young lady was among the best movers of the day, she looks every inch her age otherwise would have been considered for top honours. one to watch for the future. Very well handled.

2nd Lynott’s Avening Lovely Lady

Similar type to 1 in beautiful coat and condition. Classical feminine head with a kind dark eyes that glittered she has the cheekiest of expressions, sound front construction which showed in her movement. Tight feet, good bone and correct rear angulation, moved well once settled, just preferred the topline of 1.

3rd Stevenson’s Misty Blue Steelriver

Smaller bitch, beautifully balanced in good coat and the hardest of condition. Feminine head with a cheeky expression, good bone and feet, tight elbows and correct rear angulation, giving her handler a rather hard time but moved well once settled.

Class 16 Yearling Bitch 4.1abs

1st Brook’s Flathams Gaode Delbax From Castlerock

2nd Putnam Ebormist Endless Devotion

Medium sized bitch, sadly this young lady was far too over weight which spoilt her outline and made her roll when moving, otherwise a lovely workmanlike girl with a nice head, good bone and in good coat. Moved ok.

3rd Elrod’s Arrowhill Stargazer

Upstanding bitch, another one that was far too overweight, a little strong in the head for a bitch, good front construction, dropped topline due to being overweight, correct length of loin and 2nd thigh. Would like much tighter feet. Moved ok.

Class 17 Novice Bitch 5.5

1st Knowles Sevenhills Star Made

I really liked this young lady, a little taller than I would prefer, but so balanced. Feminine moulded head with correct fill in, excellent shoulder placement and return of upper arm. Well off for bone and the tightest of feet, Level topline and well set tail, strong rear quarters with well let down hocks. Powered round the ring with ease. Considered for top honours but gave her handler a hard time in the challenge.

Medium sized workman like bitch, very balanced and in gleaming coat. beautifully moulded head with a kind melting expression, Correct lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, good bone and feet, good width of 2nd thigh and well let down hocks. Class 21 Open Bitch 3.1abs

1st Stevenson’s Sh Ch Steelriver Heatwave JW

What an honour to go over this stunning champion, did her well as a puppy, lovely to judge the finished dog. She oozes flatcoat, from her classical head, cheeky expression, spirit level top line to her well set ever wagging tail. She has cat like feet and in the best condition of the day, floating round the ring, powering from her strong rear quarters. She demanded attention and she got it, didn’t hesitate to give her Best in Show.

2nd Hall’s Ghilgrange Magic Maiden JW

Another beautiful lady whom I have admired on many occasion, did not disappoint when going over her. One of the best heads today, classical, feminine with correct fill in and the most melting of expressions, correct shoulder lay, well off for bone and cat like feet, strong top line and well set tail which she wagged constantly. Gave her handler a hard time on the move which cost her top honours.

Class 22 Veteran bitch 8.1abs

The best class of the day.

1st Fox’s Blacktoft Blue like Jazz

My notes say ‘just gorgeous’ and for me that sums her up, feminine, classical head with kind dark eye, she is elegant, all lady. Good front construction, enough bone for size, strong top line and tailset, cat like feet, good width of second thigh and well let down hocks, flowed round the ring like a 3 year old, these 2 veterans are a real credit to this kennel. Res best bitch.

2nd Hewison’s Harvest Moon of Casblaidd

Another girl I have always liked from ringside, a pleasure to go over, sadly left some of her coat at home today. Correct size, Beautiful moulded head with the softest expression, good bone and feet, strong top line, good length of loin and width of 2nd thigh, moves effortlessly.

3rd Hall’s Blacktoft Im No Angel For Ghilgrange

Upstanding, glamorous bitch, gleaming thick coat, the most classic of heads with the darkest of eyes and a melting expression. Good front construction, tight feet and strong hind quarters, carrying too much weight which made her lose her top line whilst standing and on the move.

Class 24 Special Liver Bitch 3.1abs

1st Hewison’s Harvest Moon Of Casblaidd Best Liver in Show

2nd Colson’s Windyhollows Winnipeg

Medium sized workmanlike bitch, deep rich colour, melting soft expression, good bone and feet, deep chest, correct length of loin, good width of 2nd thigh and strong hind quarters, moved well but would prefer a better tail carriage.

Class 25 Brace 4.1abs

1st Ms D Hall

Exuberant pair, full of flatcoat charm, classical heads, similar in type both in lovely coat and condition, moved in unison around the ring.

2nd Mr R M and Mrs J Slack

Handsome pair of boys, both of similar size slight difference in heads, both had good bone and feet, moved freely.

3rd C A Knowles

Both these girls were on the tall side for me, but both feminine and elegant, at very different stages, both had beautiful feet and in good condition
