Becky A Johnson’s Judge’s report – DOGS
My sincerest thanks to the Committee of NEFRA for affording me the honour of judging dogs at their Championship Show. I had a wonderful day and would like to extend my gratitude to my hard working stewards – Bob Allen and Kath Trevor along with all those who brought their dogs forward for my consideration. It was a large entry and in many cases it was a very close call for the top placings.
I do have some concerns that seem to be creeping in. Firstly mouths. I don’t think I have ever encountered so many level or incorrect bites in one day. This is a worry as this is hereditary and care needs to be taken when breeding to try not to double up on it. Secondly there were a lot of dogs lacking the desired spring of rib. The standard states that the fore ribs should be flat with the body well ribbed up showing a gradual spring and well arched in the centre but lighter towards the quarters. In a great many cases my hands went straight along a body that was tubular in shape. This was not just in the youngsters but in fully mature dogs as well. The Flatcoat should not be as narrow as an Irish Setter in body but a great many were and thus there was not sufficient breadth and depth of chest when viewed from the front.
My final line up pleased me enormously with dogs that looked capable of fulfilling their function. My co-judge Mrs Roslyn Bellamy and I agreed on all the overall winners which was the icing on the cake – indeed the Dog CC and Bitch CC winners were litter brother and sister. Congratulations to the breeder who for many years now has produced some top quality Flatcoats.
Veteran (7, 3)
1st Jones’ Braemist Ocean Kestrel JW. A great favourite of mine. Upstanding male who
for me defines the typical character of a true Flatcoat. He never stops smiling! Classical head shape with good fill in beneath the eyes. Excels in layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Deep chest with long ribcage and short strong loin. Powerful hindquarters with well set on tail. Excellent bone and feet. Sound and true on the move displaying good open side gait. BVD
2nd Hall’s Ch Blacktoft Stray Cat Strut at Ghilgrange. Well balanced all through with good head and expression. Correct layback of shoulder although not as good in return of upper arm as the winner. Excellent topline leading to well muscled hindquarters. Correct bone and well padded feet. Moved well.
3rd Holland’s Sh Ch Calzeat Causa Commotion at Flatcharm (Imp Swe). Completed a super trio of dogs. Well balanced and of the correct size. Excellent head and laughing expression. Clean through his neck to level topline. Not the feet of the first two and sadly out of coat today. Moved well with drive.
Special Veteran (1,1)
Minor Puppy (17, 2)
1st Warrington’s Woodavens Water Charmer. The naughtiest puppy in the class!
Although he is still at the roly poly stage he could not be denied for his overall type, construction and particularly bone – where so many puppies were lacking. Well shaped head with dark eye and small ears. Excels in his forehand construction. Deep chest with good length of rib. Despite wagging his tail hard so hard he still displayed accurate movement fore and aft and just had a better length of stride in profile than his litter brother who finished 2nd. BPD
2nd Warrington’s Woodavens Shiro Noda. Very similar to winner. Well balanced all through. Excellent head. Good shoulder – though not quite the return of upper arm as his brother which showed in the profile movement. Correct ribcage and hindquarters. I am sure they will change places many times.
3rd Millbank’s Kvicksans Eye Of The Storm NAF TAF. At just 6 months old he was giving everything away but his obvious qualities could not be overlooked. Excellent overall balance with super head and dark, kind eye. Needs to develop more in his forechest. Correct length of rib and well shaped hindquarters. Accurate movement. Very promising all through.
Puppy (11, 2)
1st Ashcroft’s Gunoak Obsidian. Shortlisted in strong MP class. Correct for size and
overall balance. Excellent head and expression. Deep chest and well ribbed back.
Hindquarters just need to develop more. Moved accurately.
2nd Bowen’s Candiliz Black Admiral for Clandrift. Taller all through than my winner.
Excellent head. Well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Not the development in
chest and ribcage of the winner. Good bone and feet. Hind movement a little close. 3rd Fox’s Black Mica’s Likes It Hot (Imp Swe). Very up on his legs at present and needs
time to grow into himself. Excellent head and expression. Correct layback of shoulder. Good bone and feet. Good forward reach on the move although a little close going away.
Junior (8, 2)
1st Jones’ Blacktoft American Smooth. Excellent for type. Classic head with correct fill
in beneath the eyes and small well set ears. Good layback of shoulder and correct
depth of chest. His ribcage is well sprung and of good length leading to a strong short loin. Well shaped hindquarters with properly let down hocks. Excellent bone and feet. Movement was true fore and aft with good extension in profile. Although he had completely thrown his coat his overall type and balance won him this class which I was told later gave him his JW. Well done.
2nd Ross’s Islstrom Orrin. Quality dog from this kennel who was giving away a bit in age today and therefore did not have quite the maturity of winner. Classical head with good length and depth of muzzle. Correct forequarters and good length of ribcage. Excellent bone and the best of feet. Moved well at one with his handler.
3rd Shelley’s Pajanbeck You Sexy Thing Rivage. Well balanced and of the correct size. Very typical head with dark eye. A little stuffy in neck. Correct depth of chest with good length of ribcage and short loin. I would like a little more width of second thigh but this should come. Excellent feet. Sound, steady movement.
Good layback of shoulder. I would like a little more length of upper arm. Correct
depth of chest and spring of rib. Strong hindquarters. Moved well.
2nd Perry’s Casanjay Demetrius. Well balanced all through. Not the refinement in head
of the winner. Correct layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Excels in depth and length of ribcage. Excellent bone and feet. Winner was more positive on the move.
3rd Nelson’s Byeways Parklane Hawk. Correct size and good overall balance. Little strong in back skull. Good layback of shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm. Well made hindquarters with excellent bone and feet. Fore and aft movement could be tidier.
Novice (5)
1st Fox’s Black Mica’s Likes It Hot (Imp Swe). 3rd in Puppy
2nd Hall’s Ghilgrange Noggin The Nog. Up to height and very much at the “legs and
wings” stage at the moment. Good head with level topline and strong hindquarters. I
would like a little more bone all through. Excellent feet.
3rd Hammersley’s Ghilgrange Dudley Do Right. Another who will need a lot of time to
come to his best. Pleasing head and expression. Needs to develop through his chest and ribcage. Excellent bone and feet. Movement very close behind at present.
Graduate (10, 2)
1st Blain’s Rotherfield First Request JW. Excellent for overall type and balance.
Classical well shaped head with correct fill in beneath the eyes. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. His chest is of the correct width and
depth leading through to a well sprung rib and short loin. Strong hindquarters.
Moved well with drive.
2nd Jacobs and Holmes’ Charming Melvin Oasis of Peace JW (imp Cze). Another quality
dog whom I liked very much. Good head with dark eye and correct depth of muzzle. Well laid shoulder and correct length of ribcage. Well muscled hindquarters with excellent bone. Good movement in profile – not quite as accurate as the winner fore and aft.
3rd Creasey’s Willowswind Orion’s Star. Well balanced very workmanlike dog. Not quite the head of the first two. Good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Correct depth of chest and well ribbed back. Correct turn of stifle with good bone. Moved and showed well.
Post Graduate (17, 5)
1st Jones’ Toutnoir Hiriwa Tohuga of Benvellyn JW. This dog displays the classic type of
a true Flatcoat. He is of the correct size and balance. Head of correct proportions with smooth flat cheeks and good depth of muzzle. His forehand construction was probably the best of the day with the shoulder and upper arm of equal length allowing his forelegs to be correctly placed under the body. Excellent depth and width of chest with the ribcage well sprung and going right back into a strong short loin. Well muscled hindquarters with correct tailset and low hocks. Excellent bone and feet. On the move he showed good drive once settled.
2nd Reading’s Sastrugi Beautiful Sunrise at Sabarka. Another really good dog who pushed the winner hard. Excellent head with an expression that continually smiled up at me. Correct forehand construction with good length and spring of rib. Good bone. Not quite the feet of winner. Sound, driving movement.
3rd Romeo-Dieste’s Hopevalley Morning Mayhem JW ShCM. Completed a quality trio. Good head and expression. Correct layback of shoulder. I would like a little more length of upper arm. Good through his ribcage to hindquarters. Correct bone and feet. Moved well.
Limit (11, 3)
1st Fox’s Steelriver Blazing Hot At Blacktoft JW. This dog turned out to be my find of
the day. My eye was immediately drawn to him for his correct size, balance and he is so workmanlike – totally free from any exaggerations which are creeping into the breed nowadays. Excels in his head with correct fill in beneath the eyes and long muzzle of the correct depth. Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder. To be critical I would like a little more pronouncement of forechest, however his chest has plenty of depth and width allowing his elbows to work freely alongside the ribcage which is well sprung and of correct length. His loin is short and strong leading to powerful
well muscled hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet. Although not profuse in feathering his coat is of the correct density. Powerful mover – so sound and true. He left me in no doubt that he could go all day in the field – truly fit for function. Delighted to award him his first CC and in complete agreement of my co-judge BIS.
2nd Gale’s Willowswind Whispering Elm JW. Another quality dog. Slightly taller than my winner but still very well balanced all through. Excels in head, with dark eye and small ears. Clean neck into well laid shoulder and correct length of upper arm. Good depth and length of ribcage leading through to powerful hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet. Really powered round the ring showing good open side gait. As always beautifully presented and shown by his extremely competent young handler. Close up for RCC.
3rd Lutner & Holland’s Telurn Already In Trouble at Flatcharm. Completed a quality trio. Excellent head with good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Good depth of chest. I would prefer a little more spring of rib. Excellent topline. Moved well with drive.
Open (10, 4)
1st Douglas’ Greenbayhill Black Tuxedo. Very workmanlike well balanced dog – another
totally free from exaggeration. Similar in type to my limit winner – they are related! Good head and expression. Correct layback of shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm. Level topline with good length and depth of ribcage. Strong hindquarters with correct tail set and well let down hocks. Excellent bone and feet. Moved well at one with his handler. In excellent coat. Carrying a little overweight today which ultimately cost him. RCC.
2nd Dalziel-Scott & Scott’s Sh Ch Branchalwood Daer Water. Another very classical dog as one would always expect from this famous kennel. Beautiful head with dark eye and the kindest expression. His forehand construction is copybook as is his depth and spring of rib. Well made hindquarters with excellent bone and feet. Moved well but not quite the rear drive of winner today. A worthy titleholder nonetheless.
3rd Hills’ Branchalwood Benrioch at Lindisfarne. Very workmanlike dog of the correct size. Not quite the head of the first two but excellent overall construction. Correct angulation fore and aft with good depth and length of ribcage. Excellent bone and feet. Moved well.
Special Liver (2)
1st Charming Melvin Oasis of Peace JW (imp Cze).
2nd Evan’s Gemswin Relight My Fire. 10 months old. Well grown – just needing time to
come together. Pleasing head with dark eye. Strong hindquarters. Excellent bone. Moved well.
Special Working (3, 2)
1st Hewison’s Maddistream Indigo Jack at Casblaidd. Very workmanlike all through with pleasing head and dark eye. Level topline with strong well muscled hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet. Moved out soundly.
Roslyn Bellamy Judge’s Report – Bitches
I was honoured to be invited to judge Bitches at the Northern England Flatcoated Retriever Association Championship Show. I was pleased with the exhibits and I had a quality entry in my Junior, Limit and Open Classes. Sadly, there were a few absentees due to an outbreak of Kennel Cough. An excellent size ring to allow the dogs to move out freely, however, a few close movements evident in the lower classes and a couple of level bites too. Overall, the bitches were presented in gleaming condition and with superb temperaments. Many thanks must go to my Stewards Chris Whitmore and Harry Nelson who did a professional job of keeping the ring flowing at all times. My class winners were excellent examples of the breed and I thank all the exhibitors for their entries and sportsmanship. My Co-Judge and I had no difficulty in agreeing decisions and were thrilled that at the end of the day our two CC winners were litter brother and sister! Many congratulations to the Best in Show winner, Ms Helen Fox’s Steelriver Blazin Hot at Blacktoft JW; my Bitch CC winner Miss Sandra Stevenson with Sh. Ch. Steelriver Heatwave JW. ShCM; my Res CC winner, Mrs Linda Walker’s Lizzlog Kiss and Tell JW, handled by Miss Hayley Walker and my Best Puppy Bitch, Miss Katie Lutner’s Beautyfield’s Flashdance at Telurn (Imp Deu) who went on to be Best Puppy In Show. Also an absolute pleasure to award Best Veteran Bitch to Rainesgift Summer Thyme at Steeplehouse JW who also went on to take Best Veteran in Show. The Knight & Jacobs family’s Gemswin Disco Inferno; Best Liver Bitch, and finally, Mrs Caroline Hewison’s Donascimento Danilo, Best Working Bitch and Best Working in Show. A really enjoyable day with a super friendly atmosphere, thank you NEFRA.
Veteran Bitch – 7 entries (1 abs)
1st Joyce’s Rainesgift the Dawn of Tyme for Stranfaer JW. Superb bitch with a stunning outline. Classic moulded head with dark eye, well set on ears. Good reach of neck into correctly angulated shoulders. Well muscled rear quarters with the best feet. Super topline and tailset. Moved well. As always, giving her handler a hard time.
2nd Tomlinson’s Sh. Ch. Rainesgift Clemence. Another super bitch from this kennel. Again all the attributes of my first place, just carrying a little too much weight at the moment which spoiled her racy finish. Another bitch that has the most excellent feet, good bone and superb movement.
3rd Mr R & Mrs C Malz’s Ger/Vdg Ch. Calebri’s for Your Eyes Only.
Special Veteran Bitch – 2 entries
1st Mr & Mrs Collins Rainesgift Summer Thyme at Steeplehouse JW. What a delight to see this 12yrs and 8 moths lady power round the ring giving her handler Anne Barnett a hard job of keeping up! Val Orme’s Judges Critique – Brace, Stakes & Junior Handling
My thanks to NEFRA for inviting me to be Referee and also judge for the stakes and junior handling classes. Although not called upon to referee I enjoyed judging the classes I had.
BRACE ( 9, 3a )
I did enjoy judging this class. Attempting to get two lively flatcoats to stand and move together is no mean feat , even for the experienced handler. So consequently some good individual dogs were unplaced.
1st Mr. B & Mrs. K M Perry. Two black bitches, evenly matched in size and construction with matching pretty heads and soft expressions. Stood well together and moved well in unison with their handler.
2nd Mrs M E Romeo-Dieste. Dog and bitch, similar in looks and of good construction. Standing and moving well together as a brace.
3rd Mrs H M Fox.
JUNIOR HANDLING 6-11 Years No entries
12- 16 years
1st Georgina Mellor Very confident and smartly dressed young lady, who handled her dog very competently throughout. She followed all my instructions, showing and moving her dog round at a good pace. She was in complete control of her dog at all times, always aware of my position. Although she stood alone she was a worthy winner and I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of her in future.
SPECIAL MEMBERS OPEN DOG OR BITCH (14,4a ) 1st Walkers` LIZZLOG KISS ME QUICK JW ShCM
Well constructed bitch of correct size with a lovely feminine head and soft expression. Good length of neck into well laid shoulders and level topline, good bone and super tight feet. Presenting a lovely outline standing and moved out well with drive.
2nd Holland`s Sh.Ch. CALZEAT CAUSA COMMOTION AT FLATCHARM (Imp Swe )
A dog I have always liked. Sire of the winner and sharing a lot of the same attributes. Typical moulded head and kind eye. Good reach of neck , balanced in outline with correct angulation. Sound, true movement. Just preferred the feet of the winner.
3rd Jacobs & Holmes` CHARMING MELVIN OASIS OF PEACE (Imp Cze ) JW 2 year old liver dog with a good head and soft melting expression. Balanced outline in good coat and condition. Lively outgoing character with a constant wagging tail. Moved well.

Peter Forster’s Judge’s Critique for Bitch Classes
May I firstly thank NEFRA, the FRS and the FRC of S for the lovely surprise presentation to me of a salver at the commencement of the show. It was a very kind thought.
I would like to thank NEFRA for inviting me to judge. My thanks to my two very efficient stewards Ann and Steve and to my very patient note taker. Finally my thanks to the exhibitors for giving me such a lovely entry of beautiful bitches. It was such an honour to be allowed to judge them.
I have one or two critical comments. The first is the excessive use of treats. Handlers should bear in mind the effects. Offering treats or tossing them up and down can alter the appearance of the head and move the centre of gravity and therefore the balance of the dog. The other comment is wrong positioning of the head when looking at teeth. A scissor bite can change to level bite.
I had a very enjoyable day judging and was in complete agreement with my co-judge

Val Orme’s Judge’s Critique for Dog Classes
Firstly I would like to say that it was an honour and a privilege to have been balloted to judge the NEFRA breed Championship show, and my thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over their dogs. Also sincere thanks to my two excellent stewards. There was a lovely atmosphere around the rings making it an enjoyable day. I was pleased with all my placed dogs and was in complete agreement with my co-judge on all the top winning dogs.
VETERAN DOG ( 7, 2a )
Some lively dogs in this class, certainly not showing their age.
1st OXFORD`S TARANBECK LAST FUSILIER Close decision between 1 & 2 just preferred the finish of 1. I first judged this dog 6 years ago. I liked him then and at 10 yrs old he belies his age. An active good looking dog with a lovely outline. Well constructed with the good forechest that is lacking in many dogs. In good coat and condition he moved confidently round the ring. BEST VETERAN DOG, narrowly missing out to the bitch for best veteran in show.
2nd STUCKE`S SHIREDALE MAGIC FLUTE FOR PENNYFELLS JW. A lively 8yr.old dog of medium size, with constant wagging tail. Good head and eye colour, with again a well developed forechest, good front angulation and moderate bend of stifle. Moved well with drive. Not in his best coat today.
3rd BELLAMY`S SPRINGLINDI SULLIVAN SPECIAL VETERAN DOG ( 1 )
1st GREEN`S HERTARNS Dr PEPPER ShCM. Hard to believe this dog is almost 11 yrs old. Very fit for age presented in good hard condition. He has a good topline and tailset with correct bend of stifle, with good bone and tight feet he moved strongly round the ring at one with his handler.
MINOR PUPPY DOG ( 9,1a)
1st LUTNER & HOLLAND`S TELURN ALREADY IN TROUBLE AT FLATCHARM 8mnth old stylish puppy with a well moulded head and lovely soft expression. Has the bone and
substance that seems to be lacking in some. Good front assembly with neat feet, level topline and good tail carriage. He moved well with confidence although I would have preferred to see him moved on a loose lead.
2nd ROSS`S DOWNSTTREAM FACE THE MUSIC 7 mnth old of correct size for age. He has a well developed forechest and good length of upper arm, good length of neck into well placed shoulders. Adequate bone, feet need to tighten but that should come with age. Moved well, just preferred the head of 1.
3rd CONNER & DAVIES`S HARLISTREAM ASTRADA
PUPPY DOG ( 8,1a )
1st GODEFROY`S CASTLEROCK MAGIC`S DREAM ABOUT FENWOOD Promising young dog of 11mnths. Lovely head and expression with dark eye. Well made
forequarters with good length of upper arm. Straight front down to tight feet. Good bone and substance. Presented a well balanced profile in good coat and condition. Sound and true driving movement. BEST PUPPY DOG
2nd COLSON`S WINDYHOLLOWS RAGAMUFFIN 10mnth old full of mischief giving his handler a hard time. Good head with dark eye and well set ears ,well constructed with correct angulation to front and rear. Just preferred the feet of 1. Moved well when settled
3rd CURTIS`S TALLISTAR MIDNIGHT AYRE
JUNIOR DOG ( 4 )
1st GODEFROY`S CASTLEROCK MAGIC`S DREAM ABOUT FENWOOD
2nd JACOB`S L`AMAI TEXAS TOMMY SWING Good head and eye. Soundly constructed with good bone and tight feet. Good length of upper arm giving correct angulation. Level topline and moderate bend of stifle. Moved out well but not quite the drive of 1.
3rd CURTIS`S TALLISTAR MIDNIGHT AYRE YEARLING DOG (3 )
1st HESLOP`S WAINEHAWKE WOODLANDER AT LAKEMERE. A medium sized dog with a well balanced outline Lovely head with kindly expression, good width and depth of chest with gradual spring of rib and good bend of stifle. In good coat and condition. Tail carriage a little high on the move, but moved well.
2nd WRIGLEY`S FLATCHARM BOOGIE WOOGGIE. Solidly built well muscled dog at the leggy stage in his development. Good length of neck and level topline with well set on tail. Moved well with drive, just preferred the head of 1.

1st HESLOP`S WAINEHAWKE WOODLANDER AT LAKEMERE.
2nd HARRIS`S MARJOSI SPRINGTIME CHARMER . An upstanding dog masculine head with dark eye and alert expression. Well built with good forechest and moderate bend of stifle. Good bone and level topline which he kept on the move. Just preferred the head of 1.
GRADUATE DOG ( 9,1a )
1st FOX`S STEELRIVER BLAZING HOT AT BLACKTOFT JW. An elegant dog with a lovely head and kind dark eye. Well constructed with good angulation front and rear. Presented in good coat and condition .Well muscled quarters which he used to advantage moving with drive
which won him the class
2nd EGGINTON`S GLENDARUAL SEA THE STARS WITH PAJANBECK. A lovely young dog unlucky to come up against 1 today. Good head and expression. Excellent front construction with well muscled hind quarters, standing four square on good feet. Sound true movement.
3rd ROMEO-DIESTE`S HOPEVALLEY MORNING MAYHEM JW POST GRADUATE DOG ( 13,2a )
1st HORNER`S PAJANBECK MAGIC MOMENTS. This dog caught my eye as he came into the ring. He has a lovely head with melting expression and neat well set on ears. Soundly constructed with prominent forechest, good bone and tight feet. He moved with reach and drive. Will watch his progress with interest. Pleased to award him RESERVE BEST DOG and RESERVE C.C.
2nd BROOK`S CULMQUILL MAKIN` WHOOPEE. Another lovely boy of good type with pleasing head and dark eye. Short coupled with moderate bend of stifle. Strong muscled quarters with good depth of chest. He moved well round the ring with drive. Couldn’t quite match the front assembly of 1.
3rd WHITMORE`S CASTLEROCK MAGIC`S STAKE ON CLEARFIELD LIMIT DOG ( 11,3a)
1st TOMLINSON`S RAINESGIFT OVER THE MOON JW I have always liked this dog since I judged him as a puppy. He is the right size for me with a lovely elegant outline. Racy and well balanced with a super classical head and melting expression. With super tight feet and good bone. Well handled he moves freely with strength and drive. Very pleased to award him BEST DOG and C.C And then in agreement with my fellow judge the BEST IN SHOW
2nd WINTON`S BRAIDWYNN BENNIGAN. Well built dog of correct size. Excellent bone and tight well padded feet. Well proportioned with good angulation to front and rear, good topline and
tailset. Moved with drive covering the ground well. 3rd SCAIFE`S SHENNANJOY STOWAWAY OPEN DOG ( 6)
1st BRADY`S LLANTRUSSA HEAD OVER HEALS TO BORDERCOT. A dog I have judged before. I like his racy lines. He has a lovely outline, a well moulded head with soft expression, good reach of neck into well laid back shoulder. A happy lively dog giving his handler a hard time. Standing he can tend to drop his topline in his exuberance and constant wagging tail. On the move however he keeps a level topline moving with a good driving action.
2nd MOOR`S & ALLEN`S WOODAVENS SH.CH.WOODAVENS CRACKERJACK JW. Another dog I have done well before. Pleasing head with kind dark eye. Good front angulation with well pronounced forechest and well muscled hindquarters. He has a good depth and breadth of brisket. In good coat and condition. Happy show man who moved with reach and drive.
1st COLSON`S WINDYHOLLOWS BRERE BEAR. Well constructed with a pleasing head and good eye colour. Balanced outline with good forechest and depth of brisket. Level topline and well set on tail. In good coat and condition. Moved well with drive.

Rob Ashcroft’s Judge’s Critique for Junior Handling and Brace
May I take this opportunity to thank NEFRA and the Committee for inviting me to referee at the championship show
Junior Handing 6 – 11 yrs. No Entries
Junior Handing 12 – 16 yrs 1st Laura Leigh – Unfortunately this young lady stood on her own in this class, a well presented dog and handler, she stood and moved the dog with all the instructions that I asked her to perform in a correct manor, but if I were to be critical she needs to talk to the dog a bit more – Well handled
Brace
1st Broadbent – A well balanced pair that moved round the ring steadily with drive, straight, correct toplines and good tail action
2nd Green – Very mature pair indeed, not quiet the balance of 1st, her veteran dog was showing the youngster how it was done, took a little time to settle, pleasing heads and expressions, correct toplines, moved with drive

Dog Judge Critique
Mr Graham Lambert (Cheseridge)
It was a privilege last year to be asked to steward at the Association’s first show and an even greater honour to judge at this the second show which has to be the highlight of my judging career.
I had some lovely looking dogs to go over but many let themselves down when moving, close behind applied to the majority and very few had really strong driving movement I’m sure many would have preformed better outside. The lighting in the venue did not allow assessment of eye colour, with pupils being fully dilated, it was difficult to form an accurate opinion of expression even in an almond shaped eye and round eyes were glaringly obvious.
It was an honour to have the opportunity to judge the current top dog in the breed and add my name to the long list of those who have thought so highly of him. My co judge had no hesitation in awarding him Best in Show and I was in agreement with him that all the other awards for Best Puppy, Veteran and Liver went to the bitches.
Size does still concern me but judging is full of compromises and those that where well constructed and moved well were generally well up to or slightly over the optimum height.
Veteran Dog (4 entries – 0 absentees) 1st Smitherman’s BENVELLYN NEPHRITE JADE of SEAHEART, Strong upstanding dog on the large side but so well balanced and everything in proportion, very fit, one of the strongest movers of the day, super level topline and tail carriage BVD. 2nd Green’s HERTARNS DR PEPPER, A better sized dog and another very fit one, preferred the head of the winner, decent body proportions has lovely tight feet but could not match the powerful movement of the winner. 3rd Egginton’s BENVELLYN WINSLETT PEARL to PAJANBECK, Another big strong dog who just made it in time moved with drive when settled.
Special Veteran Dog (1 entries – 0 absentees) 1st Colson’s WINDYHOLLOWS TUMBLING TED JW, I was so pleased to be able to go over this grand ambassador of the breed, such a well made and balanced dog who at 11¼ still retains a wonderful topline and tail carriage. One to be proud of.
Minor Puppy Dog (6 entries – 2 absentees) 1st Green’s LAKEMERE MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT, Lovely well balanced youngster who at 8½mths displayed the best of the breeds attributes in this class, very good bone and general construction, steady and accurate on the move. 2nd Gubis’ GAYPLUME VITAL SPARK, A slightly taller young dog not quite as mature in body and therefore not the balance of the winner, lovely head and neck, will grow in confidence a nice boy. 3rd Hammersley’s STRANFAER DOCTOR FOSTER, This one could prove to be the best of the three when he has lost some weight, at just 6mths has plenty of puppy fat which rolled as he moved has a lovely head and plenty of bone.
Puppy Dog (9 entries – 3 absentees) 1st Donnelly’s ESKMILL TORRES A workmanlike dog at nearly the year has a beautiful head and excellent body proportions a little uncoordinated on the move at times will improve I’m sure BPD 2nd Youens’ CONTAR SHADE OF DUSK with RIVERGLIDE Taller rangier dog who will need plenty of time for all his good qualities to come together and balance. Good head and lengthy neck, good body with correct angles and very good brisket, happy steady mover. 3rd Green’s LAKEMERE MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT (1st MP)
Junior Dog (10 entries – 2 absentees) 1st Scaife’s SHENNANJOY STOWAWAY At just the year this is a well balanced dog of correct size, has good bone, lovely feet, and a good head, rather immature body but time is on his side, accurate steady mover. 2nd Sparkes’ GOWRAN FLAME 15mths Super head, good neck and shoulders, body and bone not the feet of the winner a very nice dog in lean hard condition. 3rd Donnelly’s ESKMILL TORRES (1st in P)
Yearling Dog (7 entries – 0 absentees) 1st Whitmore’s GWENADILLO WISH FOR MOUR at CLEARFIELD Dog of correct size and proportions with good angulation bone and balance, acceptable head, accurate mover but lacked drive. 2nd McShane’s JABIRU NUTMEG KOOLBOY, A rather out of coat pale liver but a very well made dog, correct for size, proportions and angulation one of the better movers. 3rd Pingree’s CASTLEROCK STORMY KNIGHT over HEATHERIDGE JW A showy classy, very exuberant dog difficult to assess. Very good head, neck and shoulders and good rear end. A pity he did not put his enthusiasm into moving better.
Novice Dog (10 entries – 2 absentees) 1st Donnelly’s ESKMILL TORRES (1st in P, 3rd in J) 2nd McShane’s JABIRU NUTMEG KOOLBOY (2nd in Y) 3rd Collins’ STEEPLEHOUSE DANCE IN THYME, Upstanding dog 13mths fine head good angulation tall and immature at this stage will need time but that’s not a bad thing.
Graduate Dog (8 entries – 3 absentees)
Very close decision between two very good youngsters. 1st Winton’s BRAIDWYNN BENNIGAN, Excellent sized workman like dog everything correct to do a days shooting. Body of correct proportions and angles therefore so well balanced, with the most superb feet, steady and accurate on the move. One for the future I’m sure. 2nd Tomlinson’s RAINESGIFT OVER THE MOON JW Another of just the right size with a very appealing head, neck and shoulders, excellent feet. I made note of some very good feet throughout the day and find that many were Rainesgift or by Rainesgift, as the winner here was. This youngster did not go quite as well as the winner. 3rd Pilkington’s GILDUFFE SHAMROCK Another of the correct size and balance, good head, a little tidying would improve his appearance to appreciate his neck and angulation, unplaced in Novice but moved much better in this class and held a jolly good topline and tail carriage.
Post Graduate Dog (16 entries – 2 absentees)
The first three in this class stood away from the rest it was a tussle to sort them out and another day places could easily change. 1st Plumtree’s REAGARTH WAHEED of MATLARAS A 3year old liver of excellent proportions ideal size and so well balanced, lovely head, just so much to like, a really good dog. 2nd Ross’ ISLSTROM QUILLAN JW Classical dog and a real showman another so well made, super bone and feet, has a Rainesgift sire. Beautiful head and ever wagging tail. 1st just pipped him on movement. 3rd Bates’ MARSALLAND TREACLE PUD A strong, very well made dog, workmanlike and very fit. Enthusiastic, powerful mover with an ever wagging tail which was carried dead level.
Limit Dog (16 entries – 1 absentee)
A wonderful class with so many good dogs to go over. I am sure a few that I knew, would move so much better outside. 1st Fox & Drewery’s BLACKTOFT EVER BLAZIN Very fit active dog presented in first class order so well made and balanced and such a powerful mover with a firm level topline and tail carriage. Truly deserved the ResCC 2nd Whittaker’s BRAMATHA BACK TO REALITY Another really well made dog and again very fit making for a hair splitting decision. Excels in bone, good neck and shoulder placement so many qualities so well balanced, with very strong rear propulsion. 3rd Fisher’s BENVELLYN CAPE WEAVER at SAWBROOK. I preferred the size of this well made dog which completed a trio of first class males, the same remarks apply to him but wasn’t quiet so enthusiastic on the move as the other two, that said, still a very good dog.
Open Dog (6 entries – 0 absentees) 1st Irvine’s SHCH VBOS THE KENTUCKIAN An honour to have the privilege of going over this famous dog. He is just such an excellent example of an ever youthful Flatcoat. Absolutely spot on for size, construction and balance. CC & Best in Show. 2nd Youens’ SHCH PERRYMEL SPRING STORM at RIVERGLIDE. A size larger than the winner, very good neck, bone and feet. Presented to perfection, just a shade too heavy at the front end. 3rd Whittaker’s BRAMATHA BACK TO THE FUTURE Another jolly good dog very good angulation, fit and active with firm level topline. Litter brother to 2nd in limit a pair to be proud of.
Special Liver Dog (5 entries – 0 absentees) 1st Plumtree’s REAGARTH WAHEED of MATLARAS (1st in PG) 2nd McShane’s JABRIU NUTMEG KOOLBOY (2nd in Y & N) 3rd Colson’s WINDYHOLLOWS BRERE BEAR Beautiful looking dog in glorious coat colour, good head, neck and bone, very fit, surprising slack on the move.
Special Working Dog (4 entries – 1 absentees) 1st Colson’s WINDYHOLLOWS BRERE BEAR (3rd in SpL & VHC in N) 2nd Chiddicks GOLDINGALE KING OF CLUBS. Good size, nice head, neck and angles slightly overweight for a working dog, moved reasonably. 3rd Brook’s CULMQUILL SUPA DUPA DAY A very fine athletic, fit young dog who I am sure would put much more into his movement if he was retrieving a bird.
Judges Critique (Bitches)
Mr R Allen Judge (Darillens)
Many thanks to the committee of NEFRA for this appointment I feel honoured as it was Audrey Foster who asked me if was available to judge in November 2009. I immediately said yes, and have now judged their 2nd Championship show with found memories of a great and dedicated lady, whom we should all aspire today, in how we should conduct ourselves when both judging and exhibiting in this now very competitive environment.

Veteran Bitch (8 Entries) Abs: 2 1st: Mr P E Forster – Wizardwood Song of the Glens
Lovely type, correct size, well moulded head with that classic expression, balanced outline with very good fore chest brisket and rib cage, still holds a level top line and strong hind quarters providing steady correct movement BVB 2nd: Mrs H M Tomlinson – Rainesgift Renn with Kilbourn
Another very good veteran racier type very feminine, well laid shoulders holding a correct forehand, excellent bone and feet, sound in hind construction and able to cover the ground soundly, just preferred the more classic head of 1st. 3rd: Mr K D & Mrs S J Rees. – Eskwinds About Time
Larger type but well constructed and balanced, another typical head, just lost out to 1& 2 on outline and movement.
Special Veteran Bitch (4 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Mrs HM Tomlinson – Rainy Days and Sundays
At 11 years old it was pleasure to judge this now mature lady still showing quality and type, super head and correctly constructed, presented in superb condition, just lost out on movement for best veteran bitch. 2nd: Mr E W & Mrs P J & Miss N E Colson Ch Windyhollows Nelly Moser JW Another lady with all the right credentials, again in full bloom very little to choose between 2 outstanding female specimens of the breed., just preferred the more racy outline of the 1st. 3rd: Mr & Mrs J P Coleman Shiredale Persuasion
Heavier type with good fore quarters sound construction perhaps showing her age when moving .
Minor Puppy Bitch (9 Entries) Abs: 0 1st: Mr S C & Miss M A – Starnfaer Miss Moffet
Very racy and feminine, excellent reach of neck and well placed shoulders, holding a level top line and good tail set, very good rear angulations covering the ground with style. 2nd: Mrs H C Murray – Gayplume Tickled Pink Very racy youngster good outline and well constructed just needing to mature 3rd: Mr AT & Mr P Fox & Drewery – Blacktoft Bazanty
Liked this puppy very typical head with kind expression well constructed, but just at that up at back down at front stage spoiling her outline and balance, not moving her best today.

Bitches – Judge’s Report – Maureen Scott
I was very honoured to be asked to judge Bitches at NEFRAs first Championship Show. Compliments to the hard working committee for putting on such a well run show. It wasn’t without its sadness as a minutes silence was given in mark of respect for two founder members Bob and Sandra Kitchen who worked tirelessly for the Club and also for Mrs Audrey Forster who passed away suddenly in July of this year.I know Audrey was so looking forward to this event and put a lot of work into its planning. I am sure she would have been so proud.
Quality in the bitches I found very good although we still have short, straight upper arms and lack of defined briskets. These two points were taken into consideration in my placings .My co judge Mr Frank Kane and I agreed on all final placings.
